How to Recognize Fake Freebie Websites and Avoid Scams?

Don’t we all just love freebies?

It’s so awesome to get absolutely free stuff sent right to your home, without spending a penny! Unfortunately, not all websites offering free stuff are safe. Sometimes we spend a long time following instructions, answering survey questions, entering our information, just to be disappointed in the end. Websites like these are fraudulent and are only there to collect information.

The point of this article is to share with you some of the tips I use to avoid scams.

1-  The website’s appearance is very important! Make sure you check for contact information and if the homepage is official or not. Anything that seems wrong should keep you away; look out for typos, external links, pages that give you an error message when you try to access them, and anything of the sort.

2-  If the freebie/sample is offered by a well-known brand on its own website, you don’t have to worry. However, sometimes you may come across a freebie that is not actually offered by the main company, but is hosted on a fake website to mislead you and scam you into providing your information. Pay attention to the URL and always check the homepage!

3-  When asked to register, make sure you enter a strong password to make it hard for scammers to figure it out and steal any confidential information you may have entered.

4-  Enter the offer on a search engine (i.e. Google, Bing, etc.) to check its validity. The majority of the time, people go to forums, chat rooms, and/or social networks to discuss their experience, whether it’s positive or negative. Check to see what others are saying about it!

5-  If you’re still not sure, go to the manufacturer’s website, pull out their phone number/email, and ask them if they have any special offers, free samples, or other freebies available.

The morale of the story is to pay close attention to where you input your personal information! Try not to fall victim to fraudulent activities in the web by focusing on the details.
