Can Extreme Couponing Work in Canada?

When I first watched the TLC show “Extreme Couponing,” I wondered if that kind of couponing would be applicable to Canada. So I did some research and here’s what I came up with:

  • You have to understand that Canadian coupons are of lesser value than US coupons. That’s mainly due to the high competition among the US stores.
  • When you acquire new coupons, don’t rush into using them right away, but make sure you note the expiration date, of course! Try your best to use them with sale or clearance items to maximize your savings.
  • Sign up for your favourite store’s Reward Card. These can provide great savings if you know when and how to use them. Sometimes, stores advertise an offer, but if you pay attention to the fine print, it states that you can only benefit from it when you use your “magic” card. There are many cases, like this one, that make you wish you had it…so why not actually have it?
  • Don’t forget your Catalina coupons! These are coupons that are printed at checkout on your receipt. These are great for coupon stacking! Which brings us to our next point:
  • If you’ve never done it, you’re probably wondering what it is…Coupon Stacking* is when you use more than one coupon on the same product at one time to increase your savings. Let’s say you receive a $1.00 off coupon by mail to use on a chocolate box, you go to your store to get it only to find that they also have a $0.75 off tear pad coupon; now, if your store allows it, you can use both coupons to save $1.75 on the chocolate box! In case you have a Catalina coupon for chocolate too, you can use that to further maximize your savings!
  • Buy products that vary according to seasons during those seasons! Let’s say you have a kid who needs school supplies for the start of the school year; these items usually go on sale at the end of summer, so don’t hurry and buy them at random, wait until the summer is over to get them on sale!

That’s all folks! I hope you can learn something from my experience as a fellow couponer!

*Coupon Stacking is widely practiced in Canada; however, only a few stores allow it, so make sure you ask around before you go, so you don’t get disappointed.
