COVID-19 Donations have shifted from protective equipment to smartphones and tablets

As you all know, our lives and the whole world have been changing in the last months. The coronavirus pandemic has forced governments to stop schools, close public places, and ask the population to stay indoors. In fact, there is a bunch of heroes out there putting themselves in danger, who we owe a lot of respect.

These healthcare workers spend days and nights taking care of patients trying to save their lives while simultaneously exposing themselves to high risks.

You have all heard about these charitable souls that have collaborated to donate money, food, personal protective equipment, and various other items to hospitals, organizations, and similar entities. However, these last days, we started hearing that another kind of donation is being promoted, the ‘mobile phone’ ones. Yes! Hospital staff members have been calling for smartphone donations, and there is a strong reasoning behind this!

Because of social distancing restrictions and limitations that are reinforced in hospitals, a large number of individuals who were suffering from COVID-19 have unfortunately passed away without being able to see or talk to their family members. Nurses are saying that having mobile phones or tables would enable them to help their patients get a phone discussion or a video call with their loved ones before they die.

Indeed, this can be very painful for both sides. From a patient’s perspective, it would be very difficult to die before having to exchange some last words with the people you love the most and the people who you respect and to whom you owe a lot. On the other hand, being informed that your mum, dad, brother, sister, cousin, uncle, or some other family member has passed away without you telling them how much you love them, how much they will be missed, or how lucky you were to have them in your life, would definitely make you feel terrible.
